Personal bests were beaten and a Gold medal settled in Round 12 of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport as a visiting rider took the win. Nova Raiders' Tim Beardmore put in a dominant ride, beating the nearest opposition by over a minute in a fine field of 23 riders. Beardmore stopped the watch on 22 minutes 17 seconds as he continues his late season come back after being out injured for the start of it.

Beardmore's nearest challenge came from Decathlon Series leader Rich Smith, who stretched his lead at the top of the Series after pushing out the rider in second place in the standings by 13 seconds. Smith put the benefits of a training camp on Majorca to good use to finish in 23:21 despite the attentions of Tomos Hales, with Hales beating third placed Rob Jackson by exactly the same 13 second margin. These three riders are pulling away at the top of the Series and look a shoo-in for the medals if they maintain the pressure over the final three rounds.

The Gold medal was clinched in the Road Bike Series as Wrekinsport Chairman Dave Moore was left pondering how to address the difficult task of presenting the trophy to himself at the club's annual dinner. Moore has turned out for this Series on a motley collection of classic bikes but each time he has competed has still managed to take the maximum six points available every time. Here he rode to victory in an impressive 26:44 despite Bethan Till posting a fine personal best 27:37 to take the runner-up spot.

Till wasn't the only one to record a personal best as both of the club's Junior riders performed just that feat. Newly signed Jack Inglis beat the benchmark 20mph barrier by just five seconds in 29:55, whilst Henry Fleming was delighted with his 30:34 as he continues to get used to his new dedicated TT bike.

First-time entrants to the 2019 Coaching Revolutions 2-Up Series snaffled the first two places in Round 7 with the destinations of both pairs of Gold medals that were undecided pre-race settled on the night. Red hot weather saw a big turnout for Wrekinsport CC's 10 as 22 teams took the line to test themselves and each other against the clock. Taking the win Chris Halford and Rich Smith had come close to beating 22 minutes in the same event in 2018, but wanted to go better. They certainly did that, taking the win in 21 minutes 41 seconds to beat the nearest opposition by an impressive 34 seconds. Halford revealed that was their aim pre-race and he knew just the level of power they would need to output to meet their target, though he wasn't on the best of nights: "We wanted to get a '21' after being so close last year. Big kudos to Richard as I wasn't on the best night".

Smith wasn't so sure his team mate was suffering in the heat and was delighted both to knock 26 seconds off their 2018 benchmark as well as hanging on for dear life as Halford ramped up the power. Smith paid tribute to Halford in his post-race comments but knew that a much-vaunted weight loss was instrumental in their improvement: "Chris and I managed 22:07 last year. It inspired me to believe I could get a bit faster if I listened to my own training advice and shed some timber! 21:41 this year. An absolute pleasure to ride with (well, mostly behind) Chris"!

A first-time pairing took runner-up spot by a solitary second as Revolutions Racing's Henri Bedford got his first experience of the format thanks to a promise made months earlier. Bedford has improved tremendously during 2019 and took an offer to team up with fast man Dan Watts as a spur. Bedford and Watts were clearly testing each other out as they passed the finish line the first time through and that desire to push on saw them finish in 22:15, just a second ahead of Series leaders Ed Middleton and Nick Long. Bedford enjoyed his first taste of a 2-Up and judging by the beaming smile post-race was clearly looking forward to another go. He stated: "The inaugural 2-Up for me so I didn’t know how it would turn out with the combination of my TT bike and Dan on a road bike after a heavy pre-race session for him. We had no real strategy before the start but we managed to work something out along the way. I enjoyed the experience, and am keen to develop and I will be back for more. Thank you to everyone, and especially Dan for the opportunity - what a way to celebrate the last day of term"!

Watts was ruing that heavy pre-race session and made life hard for himself by racing on his road bike but was impressed by the passion of his young race partner, adding: "2-Ups are always hard races, especially when one person is on a TT bike and the other a road bike. Henri pulled some pretty big turns into the wind to keep us moving well, and as a result we were pretty pleased with our time considering it’s our first race together. We’ve both agreed to come back for more in the future, although I'll probably ride my TT bike next time so that Henri doesn’t give me a kicking again"!

Regardless of being pushed into third spot on the night Ed Middleton and Nick Long did enough to seal Coaching Revolutions 2-Up Gold with the 16 points they added to their tally - despite a strange encounter of the bovine kind which was instrumental in them losing that second to Bedford and Watts, as Long explained: "One of my favourite courses, but always strong competition, and we knew Chris Halford and Rich Smith would be extremely difficult to beat. Still, getting within a second of second place was a good result. We were flying until split up by cows on the road, and the long drag back into Shawbirch is always slower than expected, so room for improvement next year! Great to see so many other riders out enjoying the event, it's what the 2-Up series is all about".

Despite that hold-up 2018's Silver medalists were however delighted to go one better this year, with Middleton finally recapturing a Trophy he last held in 2015 when partnered with Scott Harris. Like Long he knew he had been in a race, stating: "Thanks to Wrekinsport for putting on a fun round, and well done to the winning Wrekinsport team for putting down a rapid time. It’s always tough racing back to back, but we enjoyed it. Great to have the Gold confirmed, it’s been a pleasure racing with Nick who has been getting faster throughout the season. Thanks to everyone who has been involved in putting on the Series".

Middleton and Long weren't the only ones to improve from the Silver medals they won in 2018 as Sarah Grant and Alison Dockney sealed Women's Series Gold with the maximum 100 points possible in this Best 5 from 9 Series. The pair set yet another Course personal best in a season littered with them, stopping the watch on 24:47 despite Grant having to race on her road bike, as Dockney explained: "A mechanical mishap led to Sarah having to race on her road bike, but given how tired my legs were this was probably a good thing, meaning we were pretty closely matched with me in full TT mode. I'm pleased to have achieved a Course PB given the circumstances, and it was fantastic to see so many riders out on a lovely evening for racing. I feel very proud to have secured the Women's 2-Up Series win, it's been a fantastic Series for us so far with successive course PB's and we've worked really well together as a team. As always, a huge thank-you to all involved with organising and hosting these events, and to all of the competitors for creating such a fun and friendly atmosphere".

Grant meanwhile was over the moon at taking Gold and paid tribute to her racing partner as both have pushed each other to greater heights: "I'm super proud of our partnership in the 2-Up Series these last two years and absolutely thrilled to be the winners this year! Another great race for us. Thanks so much to Aly for her hard work, and to all the SCCA and everyone who makes the racing happen".

Meanwhile the Mixed Team Gold medalists had had 24 hours to get accustomed to winning their titles but were in no mood to rest on their laurels with six Mixed Teams in competition. Emma Serjeant and Mark Hill took the win in 23:44 and by 23 seconds from Deb and Bernard Hutson-Lumb despite tired legs and again reached the 100 point possible maximum thanks to that win. Serjeant revealed she struggled due to the déjà vu evoked by taking the start line so closely after a hard effort at Ludlow, stating: "I’m not sure if it was the heat or just tired legs from Ludlow the night before but I blew up just before the first roundabout! The next  six miles were just a blur of trying to stay on Mark’s wheel and do a bit on the front. In the circumstances I'm very pleased with our time, and full credit to Mark for pulling us to the finish". Hill made sure he was prepared to go again for the second evening in a row after carefully carbo-loading pre-race: "Two gels at the start gave me the push I needed on another hot evening. A fast start and first turn left at the crossroads was tough up the hill. We regained a tight pair from halfway and pushed ourselves to the line. Thanks to Emma again for another 2-Up".

    Wrekinsport CC Gordon Davis 20.7

Chris Halford opened up a lead at the top of the SB Sports Injuries Series and took over the lead of the SB Veterans Series after a terrific win in his own club's Gordon Davis event. Scheduled to take place over 19 miles and two laps of the usual Wrekinsport club course, a late change to two laps and 20.7 miles of The Tiddly circuit due to ongoing road works at Long Lane saw Halford take a 48 second win on Actual from Nova Raiders' Tim Beardmore with a fine effort of 46 minutes 4 seconds and by the same margin on Veteran's Standard with +9:34.

Halford already had a 24 second advantage at the end of the first lap and eventually doubled it in the still conditions that made this little-known course a popular choice post-race, with some fast times recorded. Those conditions had been pre-empted by a significant amount of rain which bighted signing on but which critically calmed the wind right down. Halford stated: "Thanks to the helpers standing out in the rain. It was great to win a Wrekinsport event, although I will be glad to be back onto the shorter events".

Beardmore is on the comeback trail after his early season was written off with injury but is already back on form even after a short return, stopping the watch on 46:52 Actual and +8:46 Veteran's Standard to take the runner-up spot in both competitions. He enjoyed the course change which features slight drags and no significant climbing which suited his powerful style. He commented: "I'm only just getting back in racing this season having been off the bike for three months, so I was very happy with my time and result. Thankfully the rain held off and conditions were good. Thanks to everyone at Wrekinsport for making it happen".

Fresh from a 10-day Majorcan training camp Rich Smith put that fitness work to good advantage, helping himself to third spot both on Actual and on Standard in 48:22 and +8:03 respectively. The Wrekinsport rider moved into Overall Top 10 standings on the strength of his ride and enjoyed the belated course change, commenting: "I'm happy to have a decent ride after 10 days away from racing. Strong rides from Chris and Tim on what turned out to be a fast night after the rain had cleared. Great fun"! Smith also took the Bronze medal in Wrekinsport's Gordon Davis Handicap with an adjusted 44:52, making for an excellent evening.

In the Women's SB Championship Alison Dockney made up a little lost ground on Women's Series leader Louise Hurdley after beating the Hafren CC rider by 2:09 with a fine effort of 54:13. Dockney got the better of the second lap after the two passed the 10 mile point at the end of lap one just 41 seconds apart and was initially reluctant to compete given the rain lashing down at sign on. However she relented and was glad she did so in retrospect: "Yet another evening where I questioned my sanity as I arrived to sign on in the pouring rain! I was strongly tempted to drive straight home again, but glad to have raced in the end as the weather did brighten up. Another last-minute course change due to road works very well managed by Wrekinsport and what a fantastic course! I can't wait to have a go full gas on that one as a 10. Thanks all for marshalling and timekeeping in nasty conditions and well done to the other riders - some really great results and good camaraderie as always".

Taking the Wrekinsport Gordon Davis Trophy wasn't on Pete Mulloy's radar but he did so by 17 seconds from Bruce Gregory in an adjusted 43:23. Instrumental in that victory was a skirmish with two other riders, as Mulloy explained: "I was very surprised to win the Gordon Davis Handicap Trophy. I had a fairly good first lap for me, and a PB on the second lap probably due to a big battle with Dave Moore and Mark Stocks where we changed position several times from the Hodnet island to the end. Thank you for all volunteers, time keepers and marshals for turning out on  very wet night". Gregory took Silver in an adjusted 43:40, and added: "Obviously I'm very pleased with the result and really enjoyed it. My first time trial this year, I'm hoping to do more now but need to invest in some tri bars"!

Continuing road works at Long Lane meant a course change to The Tiddly triangle for Round 11 of the Decathlon Evening 10 Series by Wrekinsport - as riders endured a gruelling five mile stretch directly into a headwind along the A53. With Series leader Rich Smith away on a training break in Majorca two of the chasing pack took advantage to narrow the gap at the top of the Series - although comeback man Tim Beardmore took victory on a fine, sunny evening only spoilt by that wind. Out for a large part of the season due to injury, the Nova Raider has lost no time picking up just where he left off, stopping the watch on 22 minutes 51 seconds for a fine winning margin of 26 seconds over the best placed Wrekinsport rider Rob Jackson.

This was Jackson's first maximum six-pointer of the Series as he pushed out a strong challenge from Loch Leven CRT rider Fraser MacKinnon by 10 seconds with his 23:17 effort. Jackson moved up to third spot in the Series on the strength of this performance but still lies 13 points off the pace - although Tomos Hales is now breathing down Smith's neck just 6 points away from the top after adding five points to his tally. Hales was fourth Overall and second Wrekinsport rider after recording a fine 23:33 and based on his finishing effort he was definitely looking to make hay whilst the sun shone.

In the Road Bike Series no Wrekinsport riders were in competition, meaning Dave Moore could breath a sign of relief as his dominant lead remains undiminished. Best placed Road Bike was Andy Hellowell of Revolutions Racing who crossed the line in 25:17, 1:12 ahead of Decathlon's Phil Roberts.

A collapsing drain caused mayhem at Round 11 of the SB Sports Injuries Series as late-appearing traffic lights meant a rapid course rethink in Wrekinsport CC's planned 25. With the Crudgington - Shawbirch leg a no go, after some furious head scratching to come up with an alternative marshals were despatched for an 18 mile journey to Market Drayton's Gingerbread roundabout as a 25.8 mile emergency course was called into action, with riders being briefed on the change just minutes from the event start.

The change and the extra distance didn't seem to affect Dan Watts however as he took a superb win by over two minutes in a great time of 55 minutes 8 seconds. Watts took the maximum 26 points on offer in this bonus point round as he took his fifth straight win from the seven rounds he has entered, showing the tremendous form he is in. Watts clearly enjoyed his first taste of the super new Peplow surface and the near perfect conditions after thinking the race would be cancelled, and he had some favourable words for the re-jig: "I was pleased to take the win on a lovely evening and got to test the new ‘Peplow pavé’ for the first time, which was much better than the original - a shame they haven’t relayed the tarmac from Tern Hill to Gingerbread island. The SCCA is by far one of the best organised time trial league setups in the country and the organisers and helpers that managed to sort a new course at short notice is testament to that, so a huge thanks to them is owed".

It was a close call for the runner-up spot as Chris Halford and Sam Morris were split by just 30 seconds, with Halford stopping the watch on 57:19. The Wrekinsport rider won his Club's 25 mile Championship which was run within the race and also took runner-up spot in the Veterans on Standard competition too with a fine +12:22. Halford wasn't finished there either, moving into joint top spot in the SB Series to tie on 170 points with Ian Nisbett, who finished 4th on the night in 58:38. Halford stated: "The course was good, I was putting power down on the drags and easing up on faster bits - and some lovely warm weather too. A big thank you to all the people that made a time trial possible due to road works, the real heroes of our sport".

Meanwhile 19 year-old Sam Morris took third spot in only his second appearance of the Series in 2019. The Revolutions Racing rider also commented on the condition of the Tern Hill - Gingerbread section called into action unexpectedly: "Fair play to everyone who got the course so close to 25 miles! Not my best ride, not my worst. I struggled going over the bumpy section after Tern Hill and never really recovered".

The only rider beating Halford in the Veteran's Championship doubled up with a fine win in the Women's too at Deb Hutson-Lumb proved what a great rider she is. The Nova Raider stopped the clock on 1:03:27 Actual and +13:45 Veteran's Standard as she looks to make up lost ground. Hutson-Lumb has only ridden four rounds in the SB Series in 2019 but has left a big impression on all of them - and from her comments almost for the wrong sartorial reasons: "Thanks to all involved in rapid course re-planning, it was too good an evening to miss. My third 25 mile time trial in a week and probably the most fun with the fabulous tailwind on the way back. I had a bit of a dilemma because my Tripsockz kept sliding down - pull them up or just Nora Batty it? In the interests of looking vaguely 'cool' pulling up was carried out! A great evening, and good to see so many riders out".

Taking the Women's runner-up spot was the rapidly improving Alison Dockney, who narrowed the gap to Women's SB leader Louise Hurdley who finished fourth on the night in 1:10:55. Dockney ended her evening on 1:08:39, raising her effort thanks to a good deal of support on course. She stated: "A massive well done and thank you to Wrekinsport for managing a very last minute course change due to temporary lights on the course. I was really pleased with my result but paced it badly on tired legs. Big thanks to my mates who turned out to cheer me on which gave me a much needed boost on the return leg! Well done all, some fast times on a lovely evening for racing at last".

Meanwhile Henri Bedford almost has the SB Junior Series title within his grasp for a second year as he opened up the biggest lead in any County Championship with another win - 136 points. Bedford crossed the line in 1:01:04 to take 9th spot Overall from a fine field of 36 riders, beating Evolve's George Coombes into Junior runner-up spot by 5:33. Bedford commented: "A good ride, although a little hot. I was pleased with my time given the additional distance on the revised course. Thank you to the marshals involved, and well done to all riders - a great win for Dan".
